David was born and educated in Perth and learnt the value of hard work by pumping petrol at his father’s service station from the age of 13. He became involved in politics while studying law at the University of WA in 1974 and moved to Kalgoorlie to practice mining and criminal law. He spent some 20 years in the Goldfields where he greatly admired the ‘can do’ attitude of regional WA. He and his wife raised three children and eventually moved back to Perth.
