'Know Your Neighbour Day' - a chance to connect with the people next door

Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney today encouraged West Australians to take time to walk across the road and introduce themselves to neighbours they do not know.

'Know Your Neighbour Day' is being marked nationally today and was started by Andrew Heslop in 2003, following the death of an elderly woman whose remains were only discovered two years after she died.

"With the amount of floods and fires over the past few months, people have again been reminded of the true value of their neighbours when the tough times call for banding together," Mrs McSweeney said.

"'Know Your Neighbour Day' is the perfect time to get to know the people next door or across the street and it's all in an effort to feel part of your local community."

The Minister said the State Government had invested $13,350 this year, to fund local government grants of up to $1,000 to host their local events, with strong interest this year.

Some Perth events being run today include:

Town of Mosman Park is holding a community fair to encourage isolated seniors to join the wider community in a range of fun activities. The event will be held from 2-6pm

City of Subiaco is holding a community luncheon for residents at Wandana - an over 55s social housing complex with the aim of reducing social isolation among residents and meet their neighbours. The event will be held from noon to 1.30pm.

"The day build's good community spirit and brings to the forefront the importance of having good neighbours to help when there may be no-one else around," Mrs McSweeney said.

"This is especially important for seniors who may be isolated or living on their own. Someone to check on you or say 'G'day' over the fence means a lot to someone who may be lonely or need some help every once in a while."

The Minister also met with The City of Albany's Neighbour of the Year Award winner Mrs Dot Lamley in Albany yesterday, where she was nominated for her continuous generosity to her neighbour of 24 years. Dot is often seen collecting her neighbours' mail, taking care of her neighbours' pets and keeping a watchful eye on people's houses when they are away.
