Michael Sutherland, Member for Mount Lawley visited St Paul’s Primary School to encourage children and parents to adopt a lifestyle change, starting Friday 20th May, by walking to school.
Michael Sutherland said “I recently visited St Paul’s Primary and spoke with the Principal Joanna Noonan and Physical Education teacher Julie Goode who is organising the schools participation in Walk Safely to School Day.”
“This is an excellent idea to encourage parents and students to break their usual routine and enjoy a walk to and from school. It not only provides great exercise but an opportunity to talk to your children, their friends and other parents in your community.”
“The number of children who walk to school is declining for various reasons and we need to encourage a change to reverse this.”
“I understand that not everyone is in the position to be able to walk to school, however it is important to encourage people to walk when possible.”
“Consider options such as having children meet at a friend’s house and walking together or organising a larger group to make a ‘Walking School Bus’.”
Walk Safely to School Day is Friday 20 May 2011.
