When Albert launched the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group’s new vessel in November he saw the fruition of an election promise.
Albert pledged a Liberal Government contribution of $150,000 towards the new rescue craft, named the City of Joondalup.
He has also met another promise to double the State Government’s contribution to metropolitan sea rescue groups from $200,000 to $400,000, the lion’s share going to Whitfords.
“I am proud to be part of a State Government delivering more than $1 million in extra funding to the group in this term of government alone,” he said.
The new 11.3-metre craft can get to emergencies quickly having two 350-horsepower engines and a top speed of 92kmh.
Albert praised the work of the 90-member group that performs more than 200 rescues a year.
“To be able to base such a sense of security on a volunteer organisation is nothing short of remarkable,” Albert said.
He congratulated the group for raising $300,000 towards the cost of the craft through community initiatives. Lotteries West and the City of Joondalup both gave $50,000.
