Local Success for Commuters at Cockburn

Accessing Cockburn Train Station is set to become easier for commuters with plans to relieve the traffic congestion caused during peaks times.

“After campaigning hard to have the Government act on this issue, work will soon commence to provide an extra 470 bay extension to the car parking bays at Cockburn Train Station.  As part of this project, new road works will begin at Knock Place that will make it much easier to get to and from the eastern side of the station,” Mr Francis said.

The planned work will make an exit along Knock Place to Solomon Road a left only turn and provide a roundabout at the junction of Solomon Road, Monash Gate and Avior Avenue.  As part of the Development Application, the Government has undertaken a community consultation process where local businesses have been approached for comments on the proposed changes.

“Commuters are the big winners.  Additional parking will be available and access to the station in peak times will allow traffic to flow more smoothly.

“The road works have to be completed before the new car park can open, however it is planned for this work to be commenced at the initial stage of the construction to relieve the congestion being experienced.

“It is anticipated that work will commence late in 2011.  Along with the existing parking bays and the addition of stage two, this will bring the number of parking bays at Cockburn Station to 1418,” said Mr Francis.

In detail the works include:

  1. All traffic exiting station car parking travelling east along Knock Place will be required to turn left at Solomon Road.  There will be a median curbing strip along Solomon Road (between north/south lanes) at the intersection with Knock Place preventing people turning right onto Solomon Road;

  1. Traffic travelling south along Solomon Road will still be able to turn right into Knock Place;

  1. Traffic travelling west along Knock Place (from Bunnings) will be able to pass through the Solomon Road intersection to get to the station.
