Francis Supports Choice for Retail Shoppers
Joe Francis MLA, Member for Jandakot, has welcomed the Liberal Party’s strong policy on taking the issue of Sunday retail trade to the people at the next state election.
“Premier Colin Barnett announced that the Liberal Party will take to the next election a policy to extend retail trading hours to all weeknights and on Sundays. The policy will provide all retailers with the choice of opening Monday to Saturday from 7am to 9pm and on Sundays from 11am to 5pm.
“I support this move as it will provide families with better choice about when they can shop. The current situation, where there is a mad rush on Saturdays, is embarrassing for Perth.
“Everywhere I go in this electorate, people ask me why they can only go shopping in some parts of Perth and not others. Cockburn Gateway should be able to trade on Sunday all year round and not just at Christmas and Easter. It’s crazy that we are driving people away from shopping in their local areas and not be able to support their local businesses.
“The only way to see that Perth becomes a modern and vibrant city with Sunday Trading is to support the Liberal Party at the next State Election.
“It’s time Fran Logan changed his tune on this issue and started supporting local businesses, and local mum’s and dads. He should be singing the song of his constituents and not that of his Labor faceless union puppet mates. Everytime Cockburn Gateway opens on a Sunday for special events, like Christmas, it is packed out. You can’t get a car park.
“Recently a Productivity Commission report examined WA’s trading laws and found that our arcane restrictions were driving people to buy online. The current situation reduced choice for consumers, imposed onerous and costly compliance on business and drove consumers to the internet. People can’t buy locally when the shops aren’t open!”
