The United Kingdom Government’s decision to withhold foreign aid to those countries seen to persecute or make illegal same sex relationships has been highlighted by the Federal Member for Cowan, Luke Simpkins MP.

In a letter to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Simpkins expressed his belief that a more pressing matter is that of persecution of Christians and other religions.

“It is my view that withholding foreign aid is an appropriate response to those countries that have within their laws of persecution or offence for those that change religion and where those laws impose restrictions or a different set of laws for those that are not part of the main religion,” said Mr Simpkins.

“Australia has always prided itself on its views and commitment to freedom of religion, equality of the genders and our strong democracy,” said Mr Simpkins. “We should be very careful about demonstrating double standards when it comes to our foreign aid.”

“What we believe is acceptable here in Australia, with regard to freedom of religion, the equality of genders and democratic principles should be reinforced in our values as we deal with other nations,” Mr Simpkins said.

Mr Simpkins concluded by urging the Minister to provide detail on the Government’s stance on this important issue.
