Michael Sutherland convinces Minister to reject Yokine Reserve Park n Ride
The Member for Mount Lawley Michael Sutherland recently met with the Minister of Transport the Hon Troy Buswell to discuss the proposed light rail route and park n ride station on the Yokine Reserve. It is anticipated that the light rail will commence at the Balga Polytechnic West and travel down Alexander Drive to the City.
Michael Sutherland who has opposed the building of a park n ride facility on the Yokine reserve since 2008 said “While it has now been accepted in principal that the light rail will travel down Alexander Drive I am pleased that the Councillors from the City of Stirling and local residents have supported me in opposing the proposed park n ride station on Yokine Reserve, a great park, which is well used by the local community. Nobody wants to see bitumen on this green space”
“While I am a great supporter of protecting trees in public spaces and along roads it will unfortunately be necessary to remove some of the trees along Alexander Drive. I together with the City of Stirling Councillors will work to ensure that a green, tree lined and inviting streetscape is created to compensate for the loss of any trees that are removed”.
“The benefits that will come from a rapid light rail system running down Alexander Drive will be enjoyed by local residents”
After meeting with Michael Sutherland the Hon Troy Buswell stated that there would be no park n ride facility constructed on the Yokine Reserve. He further stated that there would be advertising of the proposed route and a period for public consultation where local residents could make comment.
