The Coalition will encourage the development of Australia’s next generation of community volunteers with a $7 million pilot volunteering programme to be known as AUSCORPS. Under the pilot programme, up to 1,000 university students per year will be eligible to receive a $10 credit against their HECS debt for each hour of volunteer work they undertake, up to a maximum 200 hours or $2,000 per year. This initiative will encourage more young people to take up volunteering in the hope that they will continue their commitment throughout their adult lives. It will also provide further support for not-for-profit organisations and…
The Coalition supports the statement by the Australian Council for Private Education Providers, TAFE Directors Australia, IDP Education, the International Education Association of Australia and English Australia, which calls on the major political parties to recognise the valuable contribution that international education plays in Australia. Our $18 billion international education industry is currently in limbo due to mismanagement by Labor and Julia Gillard. Growth in violence against students, bungled changes to the Skilled Occupations List, the collapse of colleges across Australian and the industry Assurance fund running out of money have all occurred on Ms Gillard’s watch. Labor's failure and…
The Coalition has today unveiled its real action plan to support Australia's commercial and recreation nal fishing sectors. The real action plan recognises the important role fishing plays to hundreds of coastal and river communities in bringing enjoyment to millions of Australians and to the national economy. A Coalition Government will give greater representation to the fishing sector, increased investment in promoting our sustainable seafood industry, provide more funding for fisheries research and commit to resourcing the fight against illegal foreign fishing. And we will bring the balance back to Labor's flawed marine park planning process. We will suspend the…
The Coalition is committed to real action to assist people with disabilities and carers. Our plan supports practical and affordable initiatives that recognise need and promote self-help and independence. Australians with a disability and carers deserve a better deal. Regrettably, the Labor Government has driven the budget into debt and deficit. This has the potential to compromise the ability of future governments to improve support for Australians with a disability and carers. The Coalition is determined to restore the nation’s finances, to return the budget to surplus and to pay down Labor’s debt. It’s a problem not of our making,…
The Coalition strongly supports the Better Access program and the roles of social workers and occupational therapists in that program. The Rudd-Gillard Government introduced measures in the last Budget that would have stopped social workers and occupational therapists providing treatment under Medicare. It has since been forced to defer this action - another example of an ill-conceived healthcare measure. The Better Access program was introduced by the former Howard Coalition Government as part of the biggest ever funding commitment to mental health services of $1.9 billion in 2006. At this election the Coalition has committed to provide $1.5 billion to…
The Coalition will commit $418.3 million to ensuring the viability and competitiveness of Australia’s resources and energy sector to grow investment, jobs and exports. The Coalition’s plan for real action on energy and resources includes a range of initiatives to deliver confidence and foster growth in this key sector of the economy. Central to our policy is removing the threat of Labor’s mining tax. Labor’s mining tax is a $10.5 billion hit on one of the most important sectors of the Australian economy. Labor’s mining tax is a dagger aimed at the heart of our prosperity. It has undermined confidence…
A Coalition Government would help to protect the Great Barrier Reef by supporting local communities to take direct action to preserve this magnificent icon. The Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s greatest natural icon and should be protected against threats which may affect its future. In addition to maintaining existing programs the Coalition will deliver a further $5 million investment to reduce the nutrient run-off that can harm the reef and for efforts to turn back the spreading tide of the Crown of Thorns starfish. The Coalition believes that local communities know how to look after their assets best. That is…
The Coalition will move quickly and constructively to implement a Dugong and Turtle Protection Plan. The Plan will work to protect the dugong and turtle populations of Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands from the threats of poaching, illegal hunting and marine debris. These magnificent animals are under stress from practices which threaten the relationship between them and the traditional communities that have been their natural conservators. As part of this important environmental and marine conservation task, the Coalition will maintain existing funding and will additionally provide a total of $2.6 million for dugong and turtle protection, comprising:…
The Coalition is committed to quality schooling for all children. Education should be a pathway towards prosperity – for individuals, their families and our nation as a whole. Schools should foster the achievement of excellence and equip our children for happy productive lives. Under Labor, education has been about spin, waste, bureaucracy and ineptitude. In few other areas has the Rudd-Gillard Government promised so much but delivered so little. Labor came to power in 2007 promising ‘nothing less than a revolution in education’, but education ranks among the Rudd-Gillard Government’s worst failures. Nowhere has the waste and incompetence of the…
A Coalition Government will commit $740 million to provide the facilities and resources required to help young people achieve the skills they need to be prepared for work. We will provide grants to develop a national network of up to 30 Australian Technical Colleges at a cost of $690 million over the forward estimates. Australian Technical Colleges will be provided with grants of up to $25 million and will provide a pathway for young Australians into technical and vocational training. The curriculum will have an emphasis on real world skills development to enable students to fast-track the eventual completion of…
