Mature-age workers who choose to remain in the workforce will become the big winners under a plan by the Coalition to abolish the Superannuation Guarantee age limit. The Coalition today announced that an Abbott Coalition government would, from 1st July 2013, totally abolish the Superannuation Guarantee age limit. Currently, the Superannuation Guarantee only applies to workers up to the age of 70. Under the Coalition’s plan, any worker, no matter their age, will be guaranteed to receive superannuation contributions from their employer. “It is time that mature-age workers receive the same rights as every other working Australian”, Shadow Minister for Seniors, Bronwyn Bishop said today. “Any worker who chooses to continue working past 70 should be congratulated, not financially penalised. “The current age limit set on the Superannuation Guarantee unfairly discriminates against older workers and forces them into retirement, when many want to continue in the paid workforce. “Unlike Labor, who constantly declare senior Australians a ‘challenge’ for the nation and the economy, the Coalition is committed to combating ageism in all its forms. “I am very proud that we have made this commitment to Australia’s senior workers. This recognises the continuing contribution senior working Australians make to our society. “Mature-aged workers are one of Australia’s greatest unrealised resources Australia has. The Coalition’s plan goes a long way to unlocking and realising the full potential of senior Australians”, Mrs Bishop said.
